This page contains a list of all members of our class. This original list was taken from the 1961 Pioneer Annual. If there are any errors or omissions, let me know. Click on highlighted names for additional information. Please help me reach that point at which each and every name is highlighted!

Alphabetical listing, by last name:

Max Baker

Updated August 2000, revised 10/19/05

After graduating from Arkansas College, Max went to graduate school at the University of Arkansas, receiving his Ph.D. in 1970. After spending some time at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Hospital in Houston, he joined the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Little Rock, where he has been since 1971. He is currently Professor of Radiology in the College of Medicine.

As hobbies, Max enjoys photography, amateur radio (KC5LFR), and travel.

Max's oldest daughter Laura Bradshaw and her husband Steve are the parents of one of the great grandchildren of all time - Dillon, who is two years old and delights in rearranging Max's apartment.   His son Jonathan lives in Fayetteville and works at Powerhouse Grill.  Please visit and tip heavily - according to Max, he needs the money.  Max's youngest, Kara, is returning to UCA for her second year.  She and Max just returned from mission medical clinics in Cornwall Barracks and Fairy Hill, Jamaica.  This was their second year for clinics in Jamaica.

Update from 10/19/05.  Max writes:

I was remarried in December, 2000, to an old friend, Ann Firestone, who found herself single about the same time I did. So we are a blended family (politically correct term). We have a total between us of six children – three hers and three mine. Occupationally, they include an accountant, data manager, pediatrician, land appraiser and a very newly licensed social worker. One is still in college. We have six grandchildren (four boys-mine) and two girls (hers) ranging in age from five months to seven years. Three of our children live in the area, and three away - unfortunately the away include all the grandchildren.

We moved to Maumelle about three years ago. Ann left the Little Rock School District and went to work as a secretary for the Windsong Church of Christ in Maumelle. I am finishing my thirty-fifth year in the Radiology Department of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. We enjoy travel – just returned from a driving tour of the Amish Country, and before that a visit to Quebec. I worked with a medical mission team in Cambodia this spring. I still do a bit of photography and occasionally some history writing – mostly medical history.

I get to Batesville once in awhile. I still own the house there. And a group of local Batesville natives get together monthly in Little Rock for lunch.

Charles Henry Beel

Updated 26 October 2005

Henry received his Math degree from University of Central Arkansas in 1965.   Later he returned to school and received his MBA and Executive MBA from University of Pittsburgh in 1982.

He married Bitsy Janes from El Dorado in 1964.  Henry and Bitsy taught school for a couple of years in Kennett, Mo.  Henry worked for Carrier in Collierville, TN for a couple of years, Texas Instruments in Dallas for 4 years, then to Westinghouse Electric Corp. in Pittsburgh, Pa. as a Quality Engineering Manager.  This year Henry celebrates 25 years with Westinghouse and 34 years with the same wife.

He was in Pittsburgh for 17 years with Nuclear Power Plants, then transferred to Orlando with Steam Generation Power Plants.  He travels globally, including many trips to Korea, Singapore, Thailand, India, China, Spain, France, Germany, etc.   Henry has seen the world many times (too many times) on the company, and it is wearing the body out.  Frequent flyers have given Henry and Bitsy some great vacations to England, Alaska, Puerto Rico, California, Maine, etc.

Henry and Bitsy have 2 children: Todd Henry ('67) and Melissa Ann ('70).  Todd graduated from Baylor and Southwestern Theological Baptist Seminary.  Until a few months ago, he pastored a church in Chicago.  He is now with the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, serving in Mexico City as a church planter.  Todd married Anne Gaecke from Houston and has 3 girls: Rachel 6, Stephanie 3, and a newborn, Leah.  Melissa attended Baylor for a couple of years, graduated from University of Central Florida, and married David Turner from Orlando ('93).   They are expecting their 1st child this month.  Melissa works for a banking software company in Orlando.  Her husband is a limnologist with the Florida State Game & Fish Commission.  They live in the Orlando area.

When time and weather isn't too hot, which isn't too often, Henry enjoys golf, boating, and RV camping.  The bald head has trouble in the Florida sun!  He also enjoys video conferencing with our son and his family.  The Beels have a Golden Retriever named Deacon, which serves as a filler for the empty nest syndrome!  Henry serves as a young married's Sunday School teacher and deacon in the First Baptist Church.

Westinghouse Electric Corp. is now a division of CBS and is to be sold this summer to Seimans out of Germany. Who knows how much longer Henry will be with the company??? Bitsy reports that they may well return to Ark. to retire. "Florida is buggy and hot, but then we will have a grandchild here so that can make a difference."

Update from Bitsy, October 29, 2005:

This is Bitsy, Henry's wife.  Tomorrow is a BIG day for him as after tomorrow, he will be officially retired with 32 years of service with Seimens-Westinghouse Power Corporation.  Boy, will things be different around our house.  He's lived on a airplane for so long that I'm wondering if he can stand being at home & if I can stand him being at home :)     After 41 years of marriage, I suspect though,  that we will be just fine :)  He plans on doing some consulting work,  but will definitely enjoy being out of the same ole grind & having lots of down time.  Now he can choose when he wants to work and travel !!  I doubt that we will ever do any foreign travel again, as there aren't too many places he hasn't been & worked in this world.  The ole body doesn't recover from 16 hr. flights as it did 20 years ago & it will be a blessing to finally be out of that arena.

Note from Joe:  Congratulations Henny...Hope you enjoy your retirement!

Ann Beller

5/20/97 (Updated, 23 Oct 2005)

Dear Class Members, I am still in Fayetteville, Arkansas. All is well. I stay very busy helping my husband, Bill Justiss, in his law practice, and I manage our small rental business. Bill and I just returned from Key West, Florida, where we spent 11 days doing nothing. I haven't even unpacked yet, but I opened some of the mail and found Joe's letter, and then decided to check the e-mail, and here I am.

My son, William Cody Grammer, who is 32, just finished his second year in medical school in Little Rock with a 4.00 GPA; and my daughter, Dr. Tamara Ann Grammer, who just turned 28, is practicing Optometry here in Fayetteville. As most of you know, my children are also Frank Grammer's children. We are very proud of them. Frank does still live here in Fayetteville, and is still practicing Oral Surgery. I have one granddaughter, Jessica, who will be 6 on June 8. She belongs to Cody and his wife Amy, and she lives in Little Rock. She just lost her two front teeth. She graduates from Kindergarten at the Anthony School in Little Rock on May 28th, and of course I will be there.

My only hobby right now is Genealogy. I am working on family trees from both sides of my family. Seems they were all wine makers in Hermann, Missouri, one of which (Adam Puchta) is still in business. I am looking forward to my husband's retiring, so we can just travel and do our hobbies. He has many of them, including Japanese Archery, writing, sailing, etc.

Ann provided the following update in October 2005:

Frank Grammer's and my son William Cody, his wife Amy and Jessica (14) now live in Frank's old home at 909 Boswell.  Cody is in practice with Ange & Allen Orthopedics.  Tamara married Mark Daniel Morris in July 2003.  Mark is with Merrill Lynch & Tamara is practicing Optometry.  I am doing well.  Mom has moved to Wildwood and loves it!

I would love to hear from other class members.

My email address is ajustiss@aol.com

Ida Sue Hicks

8/7/98, Revised 30 October 2005

Dear Classmates,

I have really enjoyed reading all your letters. Thank you, Joe, for making it all possible.

For the past ten years, I have been living in Salt Lake City, Utah. I moved here from San Francisco, California when the airline with which I was employed, Western, merged with Delta Airlines. This June, I began my 27th year as a flight attendant. This was not a career that I planned, but just "fell into" after obtaining a divorce and finding teaching positions scarce in the San Diego, California area. It has proved to be a wonderful opportunity for me. I have been able to travel many places, and now it allows me to come to Batesville practically every week. My mother still lives in Batesville. She is elderly and needs constant care. I am really enjoying spending so much time there. I am able to visit with friends and classmates that live near-by, and I am finding it very comforting to be around so many people that I know and who have known me all my life. It seems that the friendships we make later in life can never recapture the memories and experiences of our friendships with classmates.

Ida Sue Hicks Luker

Sue provide this update in October 2005:

Since I retired from Delta Airlines, I`ve been spending most of my time in Batesville. I have been going back to Salt Lake City each month, with the intention of packing and moving from there, but I am still trying to decide what to do with the rest of my life and where to live it! I may be forced to make that decision soon, as Delta is struggling and my flight privileges may be in jeopardy. I keep searching for that stress-free environment that senior citizens are suppose to have!
I enjoy reading the 61 Pioneer Website and knowing what everyone is doing. Thank you, Joe, for keeping us all connected. Ida Sue Hicks Luker

Vida Hill

3 April 2008

Vida provided this update:  After almost 27 years in Florida, we have moved to Knoxville, Tennessee. It was just getting too far to drive from Orlando to see our three grandchildren. Our daughter and son in law have been trying to get us here for over 3 years, so it was time. My husband is working in sales for an AutoCAD reseller and I’m unpacking and getting settled in before seriously job hunting.

Email Address: vhb7231@comcast.net

-----------------

Revised 10 November 2005

We have lived in the Orlando, Florida area since 1981.

My husband is Lindsay Baker, who is originally from Stuttgart, AR. We met in a microbiology lab and married in college--we both graduated from Ouachita. My degree is in what is now called Family and Consumer Science, his is in biology. His career has been in corporate sales and sales management. I work for an interior designer at a vacation interiors firm.

Before moving to Florida, we lived in Texas (twice), Arkansas, Alabama (twice), Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, and Colorado.

Our daughter Amy is a graduate of the University of Florida (GO GATORS!) with a degree in architectural design. Amy’s husband Scott is also a UF grad in building construction. He heads the office of a Florida-based commercial construction firm, building hotels and time shares. They have a son born in July 2001 and a daughter born in March 2003 and live near Knoxville, TN. We love being grandparents, and go to Tennessee as often as possible to visit.

Our oldest child and only son David died in an accident in 1988 at the age of 18. Since then, our family has been very involved in volunteer work with The Compassionate Friends, (http://www.compassionatefriends.org/) an international support group for bereaved parents.

As a result of this website, I’ve had contact with several former classmates and BHS grads from other years and would like to hear from more of you.

David Johnston

David G. Johnston March 5, 2001, updated 26 October 05

After graduating from high school, I spent one semester at SAU (then Southern State College) at Magnolia.  It only took that one semester for me to waste my teacher's time, my parents money, for me to try my wings away from home for the first time and to meet the young woman with whom I would spend the next 30 years and raise three sons and a daughter.

"Post college" I got married and served in the US Army for 3 1/2 years as a communications technician.  Upon being discharged in November 1965, I soon went to work for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company from which I retired in 1996.  Most of my time with the phone company was spent in Hamburg, Arkansas where I raised my family and was active in church youth work, Boy Scouts, and was a Hunter Education instructor.

Two years before I retired, my wife Dotti died from a brain tumor.  I loved her very much and miss her.

I am very fortunate that I have met a wonderful woman named Stephanie to whom I have been married to for six years now.  After she completed her masters program at Arkansas State University at Jonesboro, we took a "year off" to relax and travel.  That year has turned into five now.  We spend most of the year in the hills of western Stone County where we hunt, fish, canoe, backpack and act like retired folks.  During the last three summers we have worked seasonal jobs in Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming.  On our days off, we have had the greater Yellowstone area as our playground.

We are looking forward to the reunion in June at Batesville.

October 2005 update:  David and Stephanie are now living in Milan, Ohio, but may be moving again soon.  Stephanie promises to let us know when they move.

Note from Joe: David and Stephanie can be reached via his email address:  djohnston_72650@yahoo.com

Mike Low

Updated 05/03/2003, confirmed October 2005

Note additional update below (10 November 2005)

Occupation:

I own/operate a small limestone quarry here at Batesville. We produce construction aggregate for concrete, asphalt, and general construction, as well as agricultural limestone and chemical grade limestone for pH correction. I was able to buy the company with some luck and help from friends such as Gary Ennis.

Having control of my little limestone company has more meaning to me than it would for most. I am a third generation limestone worker, after my father and grandfather. My daughter Sara worked for my company  after graduating from the U of A with a degree in Finance and Banking. I have been here for 37 years.

I have been fortunate in my time since BHS. I have been able to pursue some of my passions, such as flying (since 1966) with ownership in several planes: Cessna 172 up to Beech Barons.  My family (wife Bobbie (Garlin) and daughters Alyson 31, and Sara) flew all over the country with me from the east coast to the Rockies. Some of our most exciting trips were into high mountain airports in New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming and Montana on our summer vacations. We skied each winter in Colorado and managed the mountains pretty well for flatlanders. We have a group of old men that go skiing each winter(over-the-hill gang).

My daughter Alyson grad. from Hendrix with an English degree. She has a masters in journalism from UofA and another master in Education. Alyson was the editor for THE ARKANSAS TRAVELER at UofA(one of few female editors and one of only two from Batesville, the other being Skip Rutherford). Both of our daughters did summer terms at UofC at Boulder,Co. and Alyson did one semester in London.

Sara Elizabeth Low received her degree in finance from UofA and worked briefly for one of the Walton Banks and then for Midwest Lime before pursuing her dreams with American Airlines.   She lived in New York and Boston, indulging in the greatness of those cities and sharing some of the attractions with us.  September 11, 2001, took her physical presence from us and left a legacy of her rich and happy life.    Her friends are now our friends from coast to coast.   We celebrate her life and will continue to do good things to honor her name.  There is a BHS scholarship in Sara's name that we will add to each year.   There are many tributes across the country to the lost ones of 9/11 and Sara's name is among those taken on that horrible black day.   There are trees planted in Sara's name from the campus in front of Old Main, to AA in Dallas, to the Boston Common.     Even though our daughter is no longer with us in body, she lives  profoundly in our lives!

Mike provided the following update in November 2005:

Since 9/11, our lives have taken an unusual course, sometimes difficult, sometimes positive in a bittersweet sense. After September 11, 2001, Mayor Rudy Guiliani said "On that terrible day, the worst of the world met the best of the world!" I will borrow that assessment. I have met the worst by testifying in the Hamburg, Germany trial of the al Qeada criminal, Mounir el Matassedeq. I am scheduled to testify in the Zacarias Moussaoui trial in Jan/Feb of 2006. My family has met the best, beginning with the great folks in Boston and NYC. The politicians, city workers and other 9/11 families have been incredible. We attend the Ground Zero memorial ceremony each year and I had the honor of opening the 2004 ceremony with Mayor Bloomberg. There are too many wonderful gestures to list but one in particular, the military at Fort Campbell, Ky. is really special(Google Night Stalkers). I have spoken there twice and they have made us honorary Night Stalkers and named a soldiers award after Sara.

The most special is our BHS folks, past and present. We have heard from ones such as Angela Sanders(AA flight attendant), her brother Craig, CMD/Dr. Jesse Cavenar and many more. The contacts from our classmates of '61 have touched us deeply. From Elizabeth Eubanks to my close friends such as Gary Ennis, gestures of compassion make us grateful for being BHS graduates! The current BHS folks from coaches, administration, teachers, students continue to do wonderful things such as a campus tree, a "Sara's Life Stone", scholarship awards, and just recently a coach asked to use the "Sara Low Pin" logo(google) from the Family Assistance Foundation(FAF) on the lady pioneer track uniforms. I serve on the FAF board out of Atlanta, Ga.

Please excuse the extra script but this is only a small excerpt from what we have experienced during the last four years from the "best" that our country has to offer!

We have three (3) children and three (3) grandchildren. Our youngest daughter was recently married, (in Chicago), but, even though they are all married and busy with many responsibilities, we are still 'tight".
Sorry we did not get to the last reunion, but we had just returned the previous night from Sydney, Australia and Kauai, and we were just "too tired" to go on to Batesville.

Robert Pearson

1/29/2001, updated 10/21/05

Robert writes:

After graduation I left Batesville to attend college at Arkansas Tech in Russellville.  In 1965 I graduated from there with a BA in psychology.  I then moved to Houston primarily because I had been accepted to graduate school at the University of Houston.  I got my MA in clinical psychology in 1968 and worked through about half of a PhD before I got sick of school and quit.

Family wise, in 1964 I married Viva Nelle Hamilton of Russellville who is now known as "my first wife".  We had no children.  In 1977 I married Lauriel (It's pronounced like O'Real shampoo) Hindman who is a Houston native.  She had two children by a previous marriage and they are both now married and the son has given us two grandsons.

My work life has been varied, to say the least.  I was a school teacher and counselor from the late 60s to about '73.  I then became a commercial photographer with my most notable accomplishment being serving as staff photograher for the Houston Astros for about five years.  I finally discovered that you could make more money selling photographic equipment and supplies than you could making pictures so I moved to that end of the industry.  So, I spent the next fifteen or so years peddling to various government and private organizations that use photos.  In 1991 I left that industry to start selling computers only to learn that their was no money to be made in selling them.  I then got my certification to work on computer networks and have dabbled in that ever since.  My wife and I now manage an old historic fire station here in our neighbothood which we rent out of wedding receptions and parties.  I also write a newspaper column about our neighborhood which is situated just northwest of downtown Houston and it called Houston Heights.  (My editor just pointed out that the neighborhood is situated there, not the column. Jeez!)

Lauriel and I are heavily involved in our neighborhood association which is dedicated to preserving a major stock of old homes built from 1891 until 1920. The Heights has recently become the hot real estate market in Houston what with "suburban flight" by people sick of spending 2-4 hours per day on the freeways. A 1200 square foot bungalow now sells for $225,000-$250,000.  We were lucky to get in when prices were affordable.

My only constant avocation through the years has been motorcycling.  Last January I bought a new Harley-Davidson Electra Glide.  It was my first new bike since 1969.

Robert sent the following update in September of 2005:

I am still retired and living in Houston with my wife Lauriel. My big adventure of the moment is attending law school. I will finish my second year in December and hope to graduate in December of next year. No, I have no idea what I will do after that. Maybe medical school. Just kidding! I think.

Linda Thorn

6/18/97, updated 3 November 2005

Linda writes:

Since our last reunion, much has happened. Possibly you knew that Howard passed away in '91. That was an extremely difficult time. Not only dealing with a death, but we had started a new business, and both girls were in college. If I had not grown up before then, I sure did at that time in a big hurry.

I knew very little about running a business (still know very little), but I think God, luck, and an angel on my shoulder got me through. The company is growing, and I seem to be working harder every day; but I love the challenge and will continue as long as I can remain as gratified as I now am.

The girls are graduates of the University of TN (go Vols...still a little cheerleader left in me!). Both are happily married, and I love the boys (men) they chose.

I met and married Carroll Shetterly, a Knoxville native, and we are having a wonderful second time around. I hope there will be another reunion, so that he can get to know all the BHS Pioneers that he has heard about so often.

Linda provided the following update in October, 2005:

Since our move, I have cut back to flex hours, working enough to take care of my business, but taking time to enjoy life with Carroll and our Grandchildren. We have four, one six, two five and one three in December.

Carroll has semi retired, but still dabbles in real estate sales and has an ATM business that keeps him busier than I want him to be.

We have spent much of our summers boating and even do some fishing. I draw the line at putting live bait of any type on my rod. I found out that crickets can’t swim after throwing them overboard to save their little lives only to watch each one of slowly sink into the lake.

Kathleen Whitworth

5/15/98, updated 30 Oct 2005

Kathleen writes:

I have enjoyed reading all the classmate news. It seems only a short time since we were all teenagers in high school, and now some of us are grandparents and thinking about retirement. My husband, Rick, and I will celebrate our 36th wedding anniversary May 18th. We have two daughters, Mindy and Becky, and three grand daughters, Sandra, Melissa and Lindsay. We are living in both Reno, Nevada, and Salt Lake City, Utah, and we divide our time between both towns.

I enjoy crafts, flower gardening, the Denver Broncos and the Utah Jazz, Lake Tahoe, and spending time with my 51/2 -year-old grand daughter Lindsay. She lives in Utah, so we see her often. Ida Sue Hicks also lives in Salt Lake City, so we spend a lot of time talking on the phone and we enjoy going to lunch.

My parents are still living in Batesville, which means we get to visit a few times a year. We also take the Batesville Guard, so I keep up on all the news.

At our graduation we sang "Moments To Remember". We have all had different experiences, and happy and sad times in our lives, but we all shared a common event in our past. We all graduated in 1961 from a high school that gave us "Moments To Remember" for our entire lives.

Kathleen provide the following update in October, 2005:

I am still here in Sandy, Utah with Rick. Our daughter Becky lives in Provo, Utah with her two kids, Lindsay and Ridge. Our other daughter, Mindy, lives in Salem, Missouri, and her two daughters, Sandi and Missy, also live in Missouri. Missy and husband have a son, so we have a great grandson.

Family

Since my graduation from College of the Ozarks in 1965 with degrees in History and Physical Education, I have managed to acquire an MSE in Education, an MSE in Counseling and an Ed.S. Degree in Administration. Can you believe that! I loved going to school and would have continued but for a comment from my other half. I have taught history, coached, served as a director of guidance, been an assistant principal, principal, and now an assistant superintendent. I have loved every day and still can't wait to get to the office in the mornings. I sincerely hope that I have been a positive influence on the lives of the students with whom I have come into contact. If I was able to help one, influence one to attend college, change one's view from negative to positive, then I was that positive influence I desired to become. During the past four years, I have had the opportunity to be a part of many changes, wonderful I hope, to our district and the students we serve. It has been an exciting time. In case you aren't aware, Batesville School District is one of the most highly respected and successful school districts within our state.

During my Principal years, I was very active in the Arkansas Secondary School Principals Association and served as State President in 1984-85. Currently, I am a member of the State North Central Association Board of Directors and also serve on the Board of Directors of the Arkansas Elementary School Council. In addition, our district is very pro-active in the legislative arena and I enjoy being a part of that picture.

I have become very active in community projects. Currently I am serving on the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, on the Board of Directors of the Old Independence Regional Museum, and I am also an active member of Kiwanis. Lucy and I are members of the First Presbyterian Church where I serve as an acting elder and Lucy is in her 43rd year as a choir member. She joined when she was a baby!!

In my spare time I love playing golf. As a matter of fact, I make the time. I am an avid golfer and love playing different courses. Over the years, I have collected several golf items and currently have a collection of logo golf balls, pencils, ball markers, and a few hickory shafted clubs. Keeps me off the streets!! Whenever our jobs allow us, Lucy and I travel; sometimes leaving for only a weekend and other times on an extended trip. I still enjoy working in the yard with my flowers although I can't do as much as I did in years past. Naturally, if anything is happening with our two daughters or son-in-law, we are there in support and praise of and for them.
